The St. Joseph County Public Library centered in South Bend, Indiana, and the Indiana University South Bend Archives have significant original primary sources that tell the story of African American, Latino and LGBTQ communities in St. Joseph County. Seen together these collections provide a stronger, more complete documentation of this history than any can tell alone.
Our goal has been to digitize already-held documents, photographs and newspapers to present a unified digital collection online for researchers and the general public, with the possibility of adding complementary materials from the community to the collection in the future. We saw the opportunity to provide greater access to our collections, while simultaneously allowing preservation and storage of the original documents.
