The Walnut St. Initiative plans to construct the Georgetown Memorial Park on N. Walnut St. to honor many free black and white UGRR “Conductors” who risked their lives helping possibly hundreds of freedom seekers cross the Ohio River and move north away from Southern slavery. The park will include a bust of the nationally famous UGRR operative George De Baptiste, created by famed Louisville, KY sculptor Ed Hamilton. Markers and a large mural in the park will explain the stories of other Madison “Condutors” some of whom also are known nationally. The WSI and its partner, the City of Madison will create a tranquil and verdant space for visitors to relax in and learn about one of the most important chapters in American History in which the people of Madison were directly involved.
