Indiana’s Panhandle Pathway follows the old rail bed of the Pennsylvania Railroad line. Join us for Moonlight on the Tippy, a 20-mile bike ride from the Winamac Depot to a SAG stop near Thornhope on June 3, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. We’ll watch the moon rise over the Tippecanoe River as we ride through farmland on the historic rail path. The ride ends with a meal at a local restaurant.
Q&A with Legacy Project Coordinator Kaye Beall
What do you consider the key accomplishments of your Legacy Project?
- The Moonlight Over the Tippy bike ride brought in riders from across northern Indiana. These bike enthusiasts were able to see rural Indiana at dusk along the Panhandle Pathway. Bicyclists crossed the Tippecanoe River and Mill and Mud Creeks, borders a dedicated prairie preserve, and provides views of farmland. Riders will pass through the communities of Winamac, Star City, and Thornhope that were established when the railroad was built in the mid-1850's. We celebrated the history and the uniqueness of the area with the ride.
Describe a highlight or most memorable moment related to your Legacy Project.
- Ride excitement is at a peak as the riders leave the historic railroad depot in Winamac. The stream of riders of all ages and abilities demonstrates that the Panhandle Pathway is a place for recreation and exercise.
How/where are you preserving information and artifacts related to your Legacy Project?
- The Friends of the Panhandle has records, photos, and other materials related to the ride. We have also submitted documents to the Pulaski County Public Library and the Indiana State Archives for archival purposes.
