Many of Indiana’s historical markers are in need of restoration. The ravages of time, road salt and weather take their toll on the aluminum markers. Several years ago, our school became aware of the “Adopt a Marker” program through the Indiana Historical Bureau. This is an opportunity for citizens to clean, repair and repaint markers that highlight the history of Indiana. We discovered that middle school students enjoy this challenge and have the skills to complete the task. Since beginning, we have restored 10 markers and have made plans to complete 2 more in honor of the Bicentennial. In addition, middle school grade students will shoot and post an instructional video demonstrating ways to properly restore markers.
