Indiana Bicentennial Celebration 2016

Legacy Projects > Portraits of the Human Spirit-Celebrating 30 Years of Success Portraits of the Human Spirit-Celebrating 30 Years of Success

Portraits of the Human Spirit-Celebrating 30 Years of Success is a portrait exhibit and audio introduction into the world of affordable housing in Indiana and how a partnership between the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority and the members of the Indiana Affordable Housing Council produce safe, decent and affordable housing throughout the state. Photography is by Hoosier portrait photographer Tom Casalini, with residents of low-income housing tax credit (IRS Section 42) housing developments as subjects, sharing how their lives have been positively impacted by having this type of housing available to them and their families.

Q&A with Legacy Project Coordinator Jeffrey Kittle

What do you consider the key accomplishment of your Legacy Project?

  • A key accomplishment was bringing a face and a voice of those residents that reside in apartment homes that are financed with resources from the Indiana Housing & Community Development Authority (IHCDA) to light through the work of Hoosier photographer Tom Casalini. Tom not only captured portraits of residents, but he also created an audio component as part of the exhibit, which allows viewers the opportunity to listen to why the work of IHCDA and the Indiana Affordable Housing Council (IAHC) is important to so many Hoosiers. This Legacy Project provided an opportunity to give a face and a voice to Hoosiers living in affordable housing and to break-down stereo-types of these apartment homes.

Describe a highlight or most memorable moment related to your Legacy Project?

  • Having the portraits on display at the Indiana Housing Conference in downtown Indianapolis along with a keynote address by photographer Tom Casalini was the highlight of this project. Through the portraits Tom captures and the stories of the subjects, the audience gained a greater understanding of the work of IHCDA and the members of the IAHC.

How/where are you preserving information and artifacts related to your Legacy Project?

  • Portraits are currently on display at the offices of the Indiana Housing & Community Development Authority at 30 South Meridian, Street, Suite 1000, Indianapolis. We plan on sharing them with galleries across the state that would have an interest in exhibiting.
