Henry County Soil and Water Conservation District along with fellow members of the Indiana Conservation Partnership, sponsored a field day that included a pasture walk through RedBud Farm and a "window view" of the Caprini Creamery. RedBud Farm and Caprini Creamery are located on County Road 425 West just north of County Road 750 South in Spiceland.
The program included a farm tour with information on setting up paddocks, lanes, fencing and watering systems for managed intensive grazing of goats and small ruminats. A creamery tour was given as well as insight on the do's and don'ts of starting a cheese making business.
Owners of RedBud Farm and Caparini Creamery, Kristy Kikly, Mike and Jessica Hoopengardner, have utilized resources from the Indiana Conservation Partnership. USDA-EQIP financial assistance was made available by the Natural Resources Conservation Service to create an intensified rotational grazing system with dairy goats and llamas. The Henry County Soil and Water Conservation Districts no till drill was used to establish the hay and pasture plantings. The SWCDs tree planter was also utilized to enhance the property's forestry program.
Kristy, Mike and Jessica were the Henry County SWCD 2009 "Conservationist of the Year" award winners. This award showcases exceptional efforts towards conserving and perserving our natural resources in Henry County.
90 attendees, some as far as St. Louis, MO came and enjoyed the information field day.
