The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission has
given permission for the expansion of the boundaries of Bluffton’s municipally
owned electric utility.
Under the provisions of Cause No. 41751, 128 acres of land located on the southwest side of the City of Bluffton will be served by the city instead of American Electric Power or United REMC. There are no customers currently located on the land in the annexed area, but both landowners have stated a preference to receive electric service from the city of Bluffton.
The city of Bluffton currently provides electric service to approximately 5,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers in its service area. Evidence presented to the Commission supports the city’s belief that it has the technical and financial ability to provide adequate and reliable service in the annexed area.
Since neither AEP nor United have any customers or electric facilities located in the area, the Commission finds that neither company is due any compensation related to the change in service area boundaries.
The order is effective immediately.
