The Indiana Utility Regulatory
Commission today approved a new rate schedule for the City of East Chicago
Department of Waterworks.
In Cause No. 41771, the company is
allowed to adjust and increase its rates for water utility service to provide
sufficient income to allow the City of East Chicago Department Waterworks to
meet growing water needs and to continue to provide safe, adequate and reliable
water utility service to the public.
The rate adjustment means the typical residential customer who uses 5000 gallons of water each month will see their bill go from $6.56 to $9.30. The increase is expected to produce $1,264,016 of additional revenue annually.
The new rates will take effect
after they are filed with the Water Division of this Commission, and will
cancel all previously approved schedules of rates and charges.
The 41.78% increase is the result
of a settlement agreement between the City of East Chicago and the Office of
Utility Consumer Counselor.
The
utility provides potable water service to approximately 7,600 residential and
commercial customers, 177 industrial customers and two governmental customers.
