IURC APPROVES GENERATING FACILITY FOR ACADIA BAY ENERGY CO., LLC AND ALLEGHENY ENERGY SUPPLY CO., LLC

The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission today approved a request from Acadia Bay Energy Co., LLC and Allegheny Energy Supply Company LLC to build and operate a 635-megawatt power generating plant in St. Joseph County, Indiana.

In Cause No. 41966, the majority of the Commissioners approved the project will be located on approximately 172 acres of land two miles east of the Town of New Carlisle, Indiana within a St. Joseph County Economic Development District.    The district is home to several other significant industrial facilities, including one of the largest steel mills in the Midwest.

The companies presented letters to the Commission supporting the project from the Board of Commissioners of St. Joseph County, the Town council of New Carlisle and Project Future, a not-for- profit organization promoting economic development in St. Joseph County.

To allow the IURC to keep track of electric systems across the state, the order requires the company to keep the IURC informed of progress during construction.  The company is also required to seek prior approval of any transfer of assets owned by Acadia Bay.  The Commission also requires the company to establish and maintain funds to be used to return the site to its current condition in the event of abandonment, financial failure and/or bankruptcy.

Electricity generated at the facility will be sold solely on the wholesale market.
