Purpose
The Supreme Court Committee on Rules of Practice and Procedure (also known as the Rules Committee) was created by the Court to conduct a continuous study of the Indiana Rules of Court. The Rules Committee is charged with reporting to the Court from time to time with recommendations and proposed amendments to promote simplicity in procedure, just determination of litigation, and elimination of unjustified expense and delay. The Committee also serves as the evidence rules review committee established pursuant to Rule 1101 of the Indiana Rules of Evidence.
Except in emergencies or as directed by the Court, the Rules Committee publishes proposed amendments by January 2, April 1, July 1, October 1, and other necessary times each year for public comment. The Committee accepts comments on proposed amendments for 30 days after publication, and may extend the period for comments. The Committee studies comments received and submits a final draft of each proposal, along with associated comments, to the Court for consideration. Rule amendments take effect on January 1 of the following year unless the Supreme Court orders otherwise.
All comments on proposed amendments received from the bench, bar, and public are confidential unless otherwise ordered by the Supreme Court.
