Indiana has a rich legal history dating back from important cases regarding slavery all the way to the fight to save Indianapolis’ historic City Market. Important Hoosiers have played a role in each of these cases as lawyers and judges. Many of these men went on to serve in the Indiana General Assembly and the U.S. Congress. Still others have become Governor of Indiana, Vice-President of the United States, or cabinet members in presidential administrations. The common tie between all the lawyers and judges shown here is public service. Each of these men and women worked to make Indiana and the nation a better place for us all.
The Manuscript Section of the Indiana State Library houses papers belonging to all of the lawyers and judges featured in this exhibit. As you browse through the exhibit, you will find brief information regarding each person’s public service and links to further information on the related collections of the Indiana State Library.
