LYRASIS Offers Winter Preservation Tips

LYRAIS Preservation ServicesLYRASIS Preservation Services has several suggestions to help you prepare winter weather challenges to your collections and facilities. First, remember to check your disaster recovery supplies with the handy In-House Supply Stockpile Checklist and be sure to update your staff contact information and test your emergency phone tree. You can also "Like" the LYRASIS Preservation Facebook Page for useful and informative resources on preservation and preparedness. Additionally, read this great resource from the Image Permanence Institute to learn more about the effect of winter dryness on collections. LYRASIS also offers a listing of online Resources and Publications, including free online Disaster Resources on Disaster Assistance, Prevention and Planning, and Response and Recovery.

The mission of Preservation Services is to improve institutions' abilities to maintain long-term, cost-effective access to information resources in both traditional and networked collections. This program is supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Division of Preservation and Access. For more information, contact a member of the Preservation Services team.

Center for the Book Seeks Student Poetry & Art

Indiana River of WordsThe Indiana Center for the Book, Indiana Project Wet, and Environmental Education Association of Indiana is seeking the best young Hoosier artists and poets for the Indiana River of Words contest. Formerly a national program, the Center is now rolling out the contest on the state level. The contest focuses on watersheds as a central theme and is designed to help youth express themselves through the arts, while exploring their environment and developing a sense of place and appreciation for discovery. River of Words is an excellent opportunity for students to strengthen their skills and make connections between the watershed theme and their artistic talents.

The contest is open to Indiana students grades K-12 (5-19 years old) as of the annual December 1st entry deadline. Students may enter on their own, or as part of a group (classroom, scout troop, library, 4-H, etc.). The contest is broken into eight categories (four each in both art and poetry) based upon grade levels.

While the contest theme is watersheds, submissions of poetry and art on other topics will be accepted. Please consider entering your classroom or library poetry and art projects into the contest for statewide consideration.

The annual deadline for entries will be December 1st. Winners will be announced in May of each year, honored at the annual Indiana Student Literary Awards at the State Library in Indianapolis, and receive additional prizes from local vendors & recognition through annual calendars or anthologies.

View the contest rules for complete details and guidelines. You may also contact the Indiana Center for the Book at agriffis@library.in.gov or 317-650-6158.
