Union Mills School Chosen for Library Tour South Central Elementary School Library in Union Mills, Indiana was selected among a handful of libraries nationwide to be a part of the American Association of School Libraries' (AASL) Vision Tour. AASL President Nancy Everhart will visit a school library in every state in the U.S. in order to bring to the general public visual models of what good school libraries offer students and communities. South Central was selected by AIME (Indiana's AASL Affiliate Organization) as an example of an Indiana school library that is dedicated to empowering every student with the skills needed to be a Learner4Life. The AASL's Learning4Life initiative was created to increase awareness and understanding of the learning standards and program guidelines and create a committed group of stakeholders with a shared voice. South Central and School Librarian Nancy McGriff will host the AASL president on October 20, 2010. You can track Ms. Everhart's progress of by following her Vision Tour Blog. State Museum Boasts Exciting Fall Schedule By Edie Huffman, Public Library Consultant Many thanks to the Indiana public libraries that supported the Indiana Coral Reef Exhibit by providing publicity and meeting space to crocheters. Crocheted (and some knitted) items, including corals, fishes, sea fish, starfish, octopi and other sea life and artifacts were received from over 50 Indiana counties. Many items were also created by offenders at the Indiana Women’s Prison. The Indiana Coral Reef Exhibit is a partnership between the Indiana State Museum and the Crochet Guild of Indianapolis and is supported by Indiana Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts. The exhibit opens September 1, 2010 in the Ancient Seas gallery on the first level of the State Museum. Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition - Sept. 25 - Jan. 16, 2011 The State Museum is hosting several exhibits this fall, headlined by Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition opening September 25, 2010. The exhibition offers a chronological journey through Titanic’s maiden voyage, moving through the Ship’s construction, to life on board, to the ill-fated sinking and amazing artifact rescue efforts. Actual artifacts, recovered from two and a half miles below the surface of the North Atlantic, tell the story behind the legendary Titanic’s short journey from construction and destruction to eventual recovery. The State Museum recently sent public libraries in the Indy-metro area a packet of promotional cards for display. They also have put together a Grant Resources for Titanic Fieldtrip Funding guide for educators interested in bringing a class or group of students. |
