Biographical Note:
Caleb Denny was born in 1850 in Monroe County, Indiana as the youngest of eleven children to James and Harriet Denny. As a child, he worked beside his father on the farm. Denny moved to Indianapolis when he was twenty years old, and worked as the Assistant State Librarian, while attending law school. Denny was admitted to the Marion County bar in 1872 and worked as a lawyer at a local law firm. Two years later, in 1874, he married Carrie Lowe, with whom he would eventually have two children.
In 1881, Denny was appointed the Indianapolis city attorney. In 1885, he became mayor of Indianapolis under the Republican banner. He was re-elected twice and ended his career as mayor in 1895. A few years after his electoral defeat, Denny was appointed Marion County attorney, a post he held until 1908. He also served as a trustee of the Indiana State Normal School, where he was president from 1919-18. In 1924, he was appointed secretary of the State Board of Pardons, where he worked until his death in 1926.
