Crispus Attucks student to receive 2015 Passing the Torch Award

INDIANAPOLIS – Crispus Attucks Medical Magnet High School Freshman Binuri Lasanya Hapuarachchy was named the winner of the 2015 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Art, Writing and Multimedia Contest today for her essay titled “Everlasting”. For her winning entry, Binuri will be presented with the prestigious 2015 Passing the Torch Award by Indiana Lt. Governor Sue Ellspermann Thursday, January 15, 2015 at the Indiana Statehouse during the 24th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Indiana Holiday Celebration.

Binuri’s entry, titled Everlasting, was selected as the winner by a panel of judges who reviewed dozens of entries for this year’s contest. The theme for the Fourth Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Art, Writing and Multimedia Contest was to creatively portray the lasting footprint left by Dr. King.

In addition to receiving the 2015 Passing the Torch Award, Binuri will also receive a $500.00 college scholarship from Indiana Black Expo, Inc. Binuri, who was born in Sri Lanka, has already received several honors and recognitions for her outstanding artistic expression. Most recently, she was named the 2014 winner of the Alpha Omega Prize for Student Art.
