BODY-WORN CAMERA VIDEO RELEASED IN EARL INCIDENT
The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office committed to releasing body-worn camera video related to the incident involving 26-year-old Rhyker Earl as soon as the investigation conducted by Indiana State Police would allow.
The Sheriff’s Office has been given that clearance, and we’re releasing the body-worn camera video today. We feel it is critical that our community have as much information as possible and evaluate the incident independently of outside influences.
By releasing this video, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office is not drawing any conclusions about the actions of anyone involved in this incident. The independent investigation will draw those conclusions.
On September 8, 2024, Jasper Sheriff’s Office Deputies responded to a request for assistance made by EMTs from Keener Township Emergency Medical Services at the home of Mr. Earl. Mr. Earl was suffering a medical emergency and demonstrating mental difficulties and significant physical resistance to the medical personnel on the scene.
The responsibility of the deputies was to prevent Mr. Earl from harming himself or the EMT personnel while they provided medical aid.
Four body-worn camera videos will be released. Three unedited videos are from three different deputies. At times, these deputies were outside of the home, away from Mr. Earl, or the cameras were not activated. A fourth video combines all three of the deputies ’body-worn camera videos to provide as continuous a view as possible of this incident.
We want to thank Indiana State Police for allowing the release of these body-worn camera videos, even as their investigation is ongoing.
