The Jasper County Sheriff's Police were called to a possible field on fire at 800 N. and 200 W. when officers arrived, they discovered a fully engulfed car. Wheatfield fire with the assistance of Keener Township fire extinguish the blaze. After the blaze was extinguished, it was noted that the car contained human remains. The sheriffs department then called for the Jasper County Coroner, Indiana State Police Scene Tech and the Indiana State Fire Marshall. After all agencies conferred the best way to preserve the scene was to remove it and take it to a secure location to be investigated properly. This investigation is ongoing and could take several days to complete.

A team consisting of the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office, the Indiana State Police Scene Technicians, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Detectives and the Jasper County Coroner’s Office began a process of recovery, retrieval, and investigating a single vehicle fire involving a set of human remains seated in the driver's seat of a midsize SUV. Once the extraction was complete, the remains were held for autopsy by a board certified forensic pathologist. The autopsy was conducted on October 18th, 2024 at the Jasper County Coroner's Morgue. The autopsy was performed by forensic pathologist Dr. John Feczko. We were able to extract enough fluids to send for toxicology and DNA profiles.
Toxicology will be sent to the coroner's laboratory and the DNA profiles were obtained and will be tested by the Indiana State Police laboratory. The cause and manner of death is pending the outcome of the toxicology report. Identification has been tentatively made. We are now waiting confirmation through DNA.

On October 25, 2024, Jeffrey D. Pszonka, a 51-year-old resident of San Pierre, IN, was arrested on multiple felony warrants issued by the Jasper County Superior Court . These warrants resulted from an investigation by detectives from the Jasper County Sheriff's Office. A forensic interview with a juvenile victim indicated allegations of sexual abuse occurring on several occasions between 2013 and 2018. The arrest was executed by officers from the Jasper County Sheriff's Office in partnership with the DeMotte Police Department. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
