The St. Joseph County Judicial Nominating Commission is beginning the process of selecting a new superior court judge. A judicial position in the Criminal Division of the St. Joseph Superior Court will become available on February 1, 2024, as Judge John M. Marnocha is set to retire from the bench.
Commission Chairman and Indiana Supreme Court Justice Geoffrey G. Slaughter announced applications for the positions are available online and must be submitted through the Indiana Courts Portal by Tuesday, October 31 at 12:00 p.m. (Eastern).
To be eligible to serve on the St. Joseph Superior Court, a person must be domiciled in St. Joseph County, a citizen of the United States, and admitted to the bar of Indiana. The Commission is required to submit to the Governor “the five most highly qualified candidates from among those eligible” for appointment when a vacancy arises. Details on the Commission, including membership, are online.
The names of candidates applying for the office are confidential according to statute. The list of five nominees selected by the Commission is expected to be publicly announced sometime in November following confidential interviews.
