Boards and Commissions

CHOICE Board

The Community and Home Options to Institutional Care for the Elderly and Disabled Board was established in Indiana statute by IC 12-10-11. CHOICE Board members are charged with establishing long-term goals of the state for the provision of a continuum of care for the elderly and individuals with a disability, among other responsibilities.

The board consists of 17 members, whose terms are for two years. Additional requirements are outlined in House Enrolled Act No. 1067, enacted in 2024 by the General Assembly.

The CHOICE Board currently has the following six (6) vacancies:

  • One (1) citizen nominated by two or more organizations that (A) represent senior citizens; and (B) have statewide membership. The individual must be a recipient, or the caregiver of a recipient, of CHOICE-funded services;
  • One (1) citizen nominated by one (1) or more organizations that: (A) represent individuals with disabilities, including individuals who are less than eighteen (18) years of age; and (B) have statewide membership.
  • One (1) citizen nominated by one (1) or more organizations that: (A) represent individuals with mental illness; and (B) have statewide membership.
  • One (1) provider who provides services under IC 12-10-10 (the CHOICE statute);
  • One (1) home care services advocate or policy specialist nominated by two or more (A) organizations; (B) associations; or (C) nongovernmental agencies; that advocate on behalf of home care consumers, including an organization that represents senior citizens or persons with disabilities; and
  • One (1) citizen nominated by one (1) or more organizations that: (A) represent direct service workers; and (B) have statewide membership.

Commission on Aging

The Commission on Aging was established in IC 12-10-2. Among other duties, its members are to encourage the study and discussion of the problems of the aging and the aged. The commission consists of 16 members, no more than eight of whom may be from the same political party. Members must be Indiana residents with an interest in the problems of the aging and aged. No more than two residents of those members of the same county may be appointed. Commission members serve a term of four years. Additional composition requirements are outlined in House Enrolled Act No. 1067, enacted in 2024 by the General Assembly.

A Guide to Develop and Implement Living Longer/Living Better Initiatives in Indiana Communities: Developing Local Community Care Coalitions

This guide, developed with Commission on Aging support, includes evidence-based strategies to help Indiana communities become more age-friendly and dementia-friendly by bringing attention to social determinants of health in communities. In addition, it provides information about structures and processes that integrate health care and aging services at a local level so older adults and their families can better navigate the continuum of acute health care and long-term aging services and supports in their communities.

Commission Vacancies

The Commission on Aging currently has the following five (5) vacancies:

  • A member who is a (A) direct provider of; or (B) service worker employed to provide; services provided through the Division of Aging;
  • A member who is: (A) a recipient; or (B) the caregiver of a recipient; of services provided through the Division of Aging;
  • One (1) citizen nominated by one (1) or more organizations that: (A) represent individuals with mental illness; and (B) have statewide membership.
  • Two additional vacancies, in alignment with the composition requirements below.

The following will be considered regarding composition of the Commission:

  • The members must be Indiana residents who are interested in the problems of the aging and the aged.
  • At least one of these new members must represent the region served by Areas 6-9.
  • New members may not reside in Allen county, as no more than two members may reside in the same county.
  • No more than eight members may be from the same political party.
