The Ball Brothers: The five founding Ball brothers- Edmund, Frank, George, Lucius and William - started their company in 1880 in Buffalo, New York. In 1887, the renamed Ball Brothers Glass Manufacturing Company relocated to Muncie, accepting the city's offer of free natural gas, a seven acre industrial site and $5,000 in cash. The company was led by Ball family members until the 1960s and was a family owned business until 1972 when the company went public.
The company was known for its Ball jars, but its true stock in trade was innovation and applied technology. It was a leader in vertical integration and ranged into diverse product lines, including telecommunications and aerospace technologies. Hundreds of thousands of Hoosiers benefited from the businesses that grew from the little company the Ball Brothers brought to Muncie, both as employees and beneficiaries of the philanthropy that resulted from their business success.
