April 5th, 2014 marked the date of the Fourth Annual Indiana Black Barbershop Health Initiative. This year the Indiana Commission on the Social Status of Black Males teamed up with Telamon and other partners to bring the initiative to thirteen Indiana cities, utilizing over fifty barbershops, over two hundred barbers and more than three hundred volunteers.
Recent figures from the Indiana Department of Health show African American men have the highest mortality rate of any group in Indiana. African American men also suffer from prostate cancer at a higher level in Indiana than any other racial or ethnic group.
This year over seven hundred free health screenings were performed by our health professionals and volunteers across the state. The ICSSBM and our partners are encouraged by the turn out.
Health information was given out along with the screening to give participants a better picture of the risks that they may face, and equipping them with the resources and knowledge needed to take control of their personal health. The results of these screening will also allow the ICSSBM and our partners to direct future health efforts in the areas needed most.
This year’s statewide initiative partners include Admiral Medical Supplies, Affecting Cancer Together (ACT) and the Indiana Minority Health Coalition. The initiative also enjoys support from local health and community partners and is thankful for the public engagement in each city, and we look forward to making next year’s Indiana Black Barbershop Health Initiative an even greater success.
