EEAI is dedicated to promoting environmental education. The organization promotes networking and communication between groups and individuals in an effort to provide its members the opportunities to share their knowledge, skills, and resources with others.

The National Environmental Education Act of 1990 established the National Environmental Education and Training Foundation, operating as NEEF, as an independent non-profit organization complementary to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA), extending its ability to foster environmental education for all ages and in all segments of the American public.
Environmental education teaches children and adults how to learn about and investigate their environment, and to make intelligent, informed decisions about how they can take care of it.
