Asset Management Overview

INDOT is responsible for managing, building, and maintaining Indiana’s major transportation assets, including interstate highways, U.S. routes, and state roads. We manage a vast inventory of road network assets, including bridges, pavement, and traffic control devices. The condition and performance of these assets directly impact the quality of the mobility services we provide to motorists, citizens, and businesses.

Just like a house or a car, regular maintenance performed at the right time is critical in keeping these assets functioning like new, obtaining the optimal life and value of the asset, and reducing ownership costs over time. Transportation assets such as bridges, roadway pavement, signs, signals, and equipment are no different.

Through the Next Level Indiana program, our state is making record investments to improve bridge and road conditions, with plans to invest over $30 billion in preservation and construction projects through year 2037. In Fiscal Years 2019-22 alone, INDOT plans to invest $3.6 billion in pavement and bridge preservation and an additional $1 billion for local road and bridge maintenance preservation and repair projects. For more details, please refer to the Next Level Indiana and Next Level Preservation pages.

Well-Maintained Bridges

INDOT has developed a strategic, systematic, and disciplined approach to operate, maintain, and improve Indiana’s transportation assets. The goal of INDOT’s asset management program is to achieve and sustain a state of good repair over the lifecycle of the assets at a practical cost. Successfully implementing the asset management program helps ensure that INDOT effectively maintains its infrastructure in the long term and achieves a safe, high-quality, and sustainable transportation network.

INDOT’s Strategic Asset Management Plan establishes INDOT’s asset-level goals and objectives, how they relate to our Strategic Plan, and the activities and resources necessary to achieve objectives. INDOT’s asset lifecycle strategies document the decision-making processes and considerations used to prepare treatment strategies for bridges and pavement over the course of the assets’ lifecycles. We are also enhancing the asset management program by documenting asset management roles and responsibilities, business processes, and by instituting a data governance framework for asset management data.
