Alvin P. Hovey was born near Mount Vernon, Posey County, Indiana. He fought in the Mexican War and the Civil War and was a delegate to Indiana's 1850 Constitutional Convention. Following the Civil War, he was U.S. Minister to Peru, a U.S. Representative, and Governor of Indiana. Most of Hovey's published works are speeches of a political in nature, but he also wrote a history of his birthplace, Posey County.
