John Law was born in New London, Connecticut. He settled in Vincennes, Indiana, where he began practicing law in 1817. He held several political offices and was judge of the seventh judicial circuit and the Court of Land Claims. In 1850, he moved to Evansville, Indiana. He wrote short histories that he presented as speeches before various groups.
