Biographical Note:
Abram W. Hendricks was born on October 12, 1822, in Ligonier, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He attended college in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, and Transylvania University law school in Lexington, Kentucky (1845). Hendricks moved to Madison, Indiana, in 1838 where he practiced law from 1847 to 1866. He then moved to Indianapolis where he continued to practice law until his death. He was a partner in the Indianapolis law firm of Hendricks, Hord, and Hendricks. The other Hendricks in the firm was his cousin, Thomas A. Hendricks. Abram Hendricks represented Jefferson County in the Indiana House of Representatives in 1853, but lost a bid for judge on the Indiana Supreme Court in 1858. He served as a major in the U.S. Army, Quartermaster’s Department during the Civil War. He was organizer and governor of the Indianapolis Board of Trade. During the Indianapolis railroad strike of 1877, he was secretary of the Committee of Safety. Hendricks died on November 25, 1887, in Indianapolis.
His son, Allan Hendricks, was born on September 24, 1864, in Madison, Indiana. He practiced law in Indianapolis and was a very active community member, serving on a number of boards. He died on January 4, 1949.

Scope and Content Note:
The collection includes Abram Hendricks’ correspondence on Indiana politics (1859-1870); minutes of the Indianapolis Committee of Safety during the 1877 railroad strike; letters of Heinrich Schliemann to Hendricks & Hord regarding his property in Indianapolis (1870-1871); Hendricks’ receipts and invoices for personal expenses, particularly clothing, in Madison (1851-1866); a chart of the organization of the Union Army at Vicksburg (1863); papers of the Indianapolis Insurance Company (1868); and Allan Hendricks’ recollections of the Indianapolis Portfolio Club (1939).
Correspondents include Conrad Baker, William M. Dunn, Walter Q. Gresham, Winslow S. Pierce, Albert Gallatin Porter, and Heinrich Schliemann. Most only have one letter in the collection. The collection is organized chronologically.
