Biographical Note:
Charles Louis Holstein was born on January 26, 1843, in Madison, Indiana, to Charles L. and Emily (Bachman) Holstein. He attended Hanover College and the Kentucky Military Institute (1859-1861) before serving in the Civil War for nearly three years. He was Sergeant-Major of the 6th Indiana Volunteers, First Lieutenant and Adjutant of the 22nd Regiment Indiana Volunteers, and was continually promoted until he reached the rank of Captain as Assistant Adjutant-General of Volunteers. Following his service, he graduated from Hanover College and then entered Harvard Law School (1865). Holstein was admitted to the bar in 1866 and began practicing law in Indianapolis. He practiced with a number of firms in Indianapolis and Chicago, including Elliott & Holstein (Indianapolis), Flower, Remy & Holstein (Chicago), and Holstein & Barrett (Indianapolis). On December 17, 1868, he married Maggie V. Nickum.
Holstein served as assistant to the U.S. District Attorney for Indiana (1871-1880) until being appointed District Attorney by President Rutherford B. Hayes. He continued in that role until 1885 when he returned to private practice. Holstein was known for his oration skills and was a published poet. He died on January 22, 1901, at his Indianapolis home.

Scope and Content Note:
The collection consists of two scrapbooks. The first contains clippings Holstein found of interest including many poems; his report cards from Hanover College and the Kentucky Military Institute; and programs (1855-1867). The items are not arranged chronologically within the book. The second contains articles written by Holstein, largely on political and legal issues (1884-1893).
