Biographical Note:
Cyrus C. Hines was born on December 10, 1830, in Washington County, New York. He arrived in Indianapolis, Indiana, in April 1854, and began studying law with Simon Yandes. In 1855, he was admitted to the bar and entered into practice with Yandes. Hines enlisted in the 11th Indiana Volunteers on April 19, 1861 and was appointed Second Sergeant of Company H. On August 28, 1863, he resigned from service after reaching the rank of Colonel (57th Indiana Volunteers) due to an injury sustained in late 1862.
He returned to his law practice in May 1866. In October of that year, he was elected judge of the judicial circuit comprising Marion, Hendricks, and Johnson counties. He held this judgeship until December 1870 when he resigned. Shortly thereafter, he entered into a law practice with Albert Gallatin Porter and Benjamin Harrison. In 1873, the firm became Harrison & Hines when Porter retired. Later partners included William Henry Harrison Miller and John B. Elam. Hines left the practice in 1884 to care for his ailing brother and his estate. After his brother’s death in 1885, Hines moved to New York City. He died in 1901.
