Biographical Note:

Frederick Lawrence Feick was born on March 8, 1878, in Willard, Ohio. He moved to Garrett, Indiana, in 1897. In 1899, he married Lena Stoner with whom he had one son, Dale. Before practicing law, Feick worked for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (1897-1901) and was a lobbyist for the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen (c. 1901-1909). He also wrote a book titled The Life of Railway Men (1905). He was admitted to the bar in 1909 and practiced law in Garrett. After practicing law for a time, Feick entered the public arena. He served as a State Representative (1915); Deputy Inspector for the Indiana Department of Oil Inspection (1915-1916); U.S. Commissioner (1917-1918); and Mayor of Garrett, Indiana (1934-1963). In 1936, he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention. He died on January 15, 1967.

Scope and Content Note:

The collection primarily consists of Feick’s correspondence while Mayor of Garrett, Indiana. Some correspondence is from his time working with the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. The bulk of the newspaper clippings relate to Feick’s work on behalf of the Brotherhood with a few from his time as Mayor. There are also a few promotional materials, largely related to political campaigns.  All the materials are photocopies.
