Biographical Note:
George Washington Grubbs was born on September 26, 1841, in Franklin. Indiana. After graduating from Franklin College in 1861, he became principal of Franklin Academy. During the Civil War, he served in the 70th Indiana Volunteers, as assistant adjutant-general of the 1st Brigade of the 3rd Division of the 20th Army Corps, and as major of the 42nd Colored Infantry. Grubbs attended Central Law School (Indianapolis) after leaving the army in 1866. He graduated in 1868 and began practicing law in Martinsville, Indiana. In 1872, he married Mary Viola Griggs with whom he had four children.
Grubbs also held a number of public offices including State Representative (1877-1879); State Senator (1879-1883); and judge of the 15th circuit (1888-1900). He ran for U.S. Representative on the Republican ticket in 1880, but was defeated. Grubbs died on January 25, 1924.
