Biographical Note:
Henry Clay Duncan was born on January 16, 1845, in Lawrence County, Indiana. He attended the U.S. Military Academy (West Point, NY), North Western Christian (Butler) University in Indianapolis, and Indiana University. He graduated from the IU law school in 1870. Clay married Sarah Cummings in 1872. They had five children. He served in the 136th Regiment of the Indiana Volunteers during the Civil War. In 1874, Clay moved to Bloomington, Indiana. He served in a number of public offices including Bloomington city attorney, Monroe County attorney, prosecuting attorney for the 10th circuit (1881-1883), judge for the 10th circuit (1890), and Indiana Senator (1895, 1897). Clay lost a bid for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1888. He died January 30, 1911.
