Biographical Note:
Samuel Hamilton Buskirk was born on January 19, 1820, in New Albany, Indiana. He moved to Monroe County, Indiana, in 1831 and graduated from Indiana University (Bloomington) in 1841. He served as Monroe County recorder (1844-1845) and Monroe County prosecuting attorney (1851). He married Sarah Walter in 1845. They had six children. In 1848, he began practicing law. He served five terms (1848-49, 1851-52, 1863, 1865) in the Indiana House of Representatives and was named Speaker of the House in 1863. In 1859, he was appointed Director of the Indiana State Prison by Governor A. P. Willard. Buskirk was appointed to the Indiana Supreme Court in 1870 and served on the bench until 1876. He died on April 3, 1879, in Indianapolis.

The collection contains two certificates issued to Samuel H. Buskirk. One appoints him Director of the Indiana State Prison. The other appoints him a judge of the Indiana Supreme Court from the 3rd District.
