Biographical Note:

Daniel Wolsey Voorhees was born on September 26, 1827, in Liberty Township, Butler County, Ohio. His family moved to Indiana while he was still a child. In 1849, he graduated from Indiana Asbury (DePauw) University. Voorhees then studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1851. He began practicing law in Covington, Indiana. He moved to Terre Haute, Indiana, where he continued to practice law. He served as U.S. District Attorney for Indiana (1858-1861). Voorhees was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and served from 1861 to 1866 and 1869 to 1873. He also served in the U.S. Senate from 1877 to 1897. While a Senator, he served as chairman of the Committee on the Library (46th Congress) and the Committee on Finance (53rd Congress). He died on April 10, 1897, shortly after leaving the Senate.

Scope and Content Note:

The collection contains two letters written by Voorhees. The first is to Colonel Richard W. Thompson regarding Voorhees’ impending trip to Washington. The other is to James C. Drury, Attorney General of Indiana, regarding a painting of James Hughes that Voorhees had hung in the Indiana State Library and wanted to remove to give to the Hughes family.
