Biographical Note:
Frederick E. Schortemeier was born on March 25, 1889, in Shelbyville, Indiana. His parents were Henry and Sophia Schroer Schortemeier. Schortemeier graduated from Butler College in 1912 with an A.B. and from Harvard University in 1915 with an LL.B. degree. He married Margrette Boyer on December 29, 1915, with whom he had two children, Mary and Fazli. He worked as a reporter for the Indianapolis Star from 1908 to 1917 and was admitted to the bar in 1915. Schortemeier served as private secretary to U.S. Senator Harry S. New (1917-1919); secretary of the Republican State Committee of Indiana (1920-1924); and Indiana Secretary of State (1924-1928). He was then an instructor at the Indiana University Law School from 1932 to 1944. Schortemeier began a private law practice in 1944. He died on June 18, 1965.

The collection consists of correspondence between Schortemeier and Frances Nakarai, a librarian at the Indiana State Library, and various papers the Schortemeier would enclose in his letters to her.
