Biographical Note:

Waller Taylor was born in Lunenburg County, Virginia, before 1786. He practiced law in Virginia before moving to Vincennes, Indiana, in 1804. Taylor was appointed chancellor of the Indiana Territory and a major in the Territorial militia in 1807. He served in the War of 1812 and was promoted to adjutant general in 1814. Taylor was elected as one of Indiana’s first representatives to the U.S. Senate in 1816 and served as a senator until 1825. He died in Lunenburg County, Virginia, on August 26, 1826.

Scope and Content Note:

The collection primarily consists of photocopies of handwritten letters from Waller Taylor to John C. Short. There is also a transcript of a letter from Taylor to Major Edmund H. Taylor.
