Benefit Effective Dates

New Hires

All State of Indiana employees hired into a benefits-eligible position have a 15-day waiting period that begins on their hire date. After the 15th day, benefits will take effect on the 1st of the following month. If the 15th day falls on the 1st of the month, benefits will take effect immediately.

Example 1: An employee is hired on 8/4/2024. The 15-day waiting period ends on 8/19/2024. This employee’s benefits will take effect on 9/01/2024.

Example 2: An employee is hired on 10/17/2024. The 15-day waiting period ends on 11/01/2024. This employee’s benefits will take effect on 11/01/2024.

End of Employment

Benefits extend through the last day of the month in which an employee leaves employment with the State of Indiana. If the last day worked is the last day of the month, benefits will terminate immediately.

Example 1: An employee’s last day of work is 9/30/2024, and their separation date is entered as 10/01/2024. This employee’s benefits will terminate as of 10/01/2024. The last day they can use their coverage will be 9/30/2024.

Example 2: An employee’s last day of work is 12/04/2024, and their separation date is entered as 12/05/2024. This employee’s benefits will terminate as of 1/01/2025. The last day they can use their coverage will be 12/31/2024.

Qualifying Life Events

The effective date for benefit changes made due to a qualifying life event are determined by the type of event experienced. For most events, changes occur either on the date of the event, or on the 1st of the month following the event date.

If you believe you have experienced a qualifying life event, please contact the INSPD Benefits Hotline at 317-232-3011 as soon as possible. A Benefits Specialist will review the effective date rules for your situation and guide you through the process of changing your elections.
