A Few Facts About Lagro
Lagro is a town located along the Wabash River about an hour southwest of Fort Wayne, Indiana. Lagro was named after Le Gris, a Miami Chief. Nestled opposite of the Salamonie River, this small town is rich in Irish history. In the early 1830s, the Irish began to arrive in large numbers to capitalize on the development of the Wabash and Erie Canal project. By 1853, the Wabash and Erie canal represented America’s longest canal at approximately 460 miles, according to the Indiana Historical Bureau. As many as 1000 men worked on the canal using spades and shovels to complete this impressive project. The beautiful St. Patrick’s Catholic Church was founded in 1836, the bricks used for construction were brought by canal boat from Huntington. The church bell was brought by ox cart from Buffalo, and is still hanging there today. In 1999, it was listed on the National Register of Historical Places.
