Continuing Education for Registered Veterinary Technicians

Registered Veterinary Technicians are required to complete 16 hours of continuing education in the area of veterinary medicine for biennial license renewal on January 1 of each even-numbered year. The next renewal date is JANUARY 1, 2026.

1. How many continuing education hours do I need to renew my license?
Registered Veterinary Technicians are required to complete 16 hours of continuing education in the area of veterinary medicine during every 2-year renewal period.

2. How many hours of continuing education do I need if I have been licensed less than 24 months?
You will need 8 hours of continuing education to renew your license.


3. How many hours of continuing education do I need if I have been licensed less than 12 months?
You do not need any continuing education to renew your license.


4. Can continuing education credits transfer from one renewal period to the next?
No. Credits can only be counted for the period in which they are taken.


5. Do copies of my completed continuing education certificates need to be sent to the Board when I renew my license?
No. Certificates are for your records and will need to be submitted only if you are audited.  However, licensees are required to maintain copies of their CE records for a period of four years, which may be requested for an audit by the Board.


6. What do I do if I am audited?
You will receive your audit letter instructing you how to provide copies of continuing education certificates to the Board.


7. What are the limits on types of continuing education? Self-study credits are limited to 4 hours per biennial renewal period for registered veterinary technicians. Self-study methods of presentation must include a written examination or post-evaluation. You must obtain a certificate of completion.
