The wildlife population in your area could also play a hand in your biosecurity program. Birds and wildlife could introduce salmonella, deer can introduce brucellosis and coyotes could introduce salmonella and leptospirosis. Insects can carry infectious disease agents such as bluetongue or anaplasmosis, while rodents can be a source of salmonella or e. coli.
Control Points
- Eliminate or exclude wildlife from premises, where possible.
- Control pest populations and access to feedstuffs.
- Control populations of insects, birds and rodents in contact with the herd.
- Isolate new animals in a tightly controlled area, free of wildlife contact.
