Meat Grading Interest Survey for Livestock Producers

The Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH) is conducting a survey of livestock producers to determine feasibility of offering USDA-grading of meat.

Carcasses that can be USDA-graded include: cattle, sheep, swine and poultry.

Meat grading, which is regulated by the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (USDA AMS), is not currently offered by BOAH. While inspection for wholesomeness is mandatory, grading is voluntary.

To provide grading services, BOAH staff members must complete additional, extensive training. This survey is intended to help BOAH Meat & Poultry Division leadership assess the demand for the service in the state of Indiana, and determine if a grading program could be sustained.

NOTE: The cost of a grading service will be charged to the plant and likely passed along to the producer
