Indianapolis – The Indiana Civil Rights Commission has partnered with the Indiana Commission on Public Records to produce a video that will document a Hoosier’s efforts in the Civil Rights Movement through the 1960s.

Dr. Thomas Brown was raised in Indianapolis before coming of age and joining the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in Georgia in the early 1960s. As a SNCC member Dr. Brown traveled to primarily African American college campuses in order to raise voting rights awareness and set up SNCC chapters throughout the southern states. Dr. Brown played an important role in pivotal demonstrations, including the historic marches that took place in Selma, Alabama in 1965.

In March, members of the Indiana Commission on Public Records and the Indiana Civil Rights Commission traveled with Dr. Brown through many of these southern states to discuss the events that took place there, their impact on him and the progress that has been made since that time.

The video project will be made available to the public upon completion and will be disseminated through various media outlets. For more information on this project contact Darren Thomas at darthomas@icrc.in.gov.
