Bloomington-The Indiana Civil Rights Commission, the City of Bloomington Human Rights Commission and the Monroe County Apartment Association (MCAA) will conduct a Fair Housing workshop on Wednesday, June 27th at Chapman’s Restaurant in Bloomington. The free training, as part of The Power of Diversity™ statewide series, will focus on policies and procedures under the Indiana Fair Housing Act (IFHA) as well as provisions under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
“It is important that we reach every corner of the state in our education and outreach efforts,” said Jamal L. Smith, Executive Director of the Indiana Civil Rights Commission. “We want to ensure that housing providers, specifically, are aware of their rights and responsibilities under the Indiana Fair Housing Act to prevent illegal discrimination.”
Enacted in 1968, the IFHA ensures that Hoosiers, regardless of their race, color, religion, nationality, gender, disability or familial status are afforded equal opportunities in real estate related transactions.
The training conducted by the Indiana Civil Rights Commission, in partnership with the City of Bloomington Human Rights Commission and the MCAA, will provide an overview of the IFHA, specific examples of housing discrimination and important legislative updates including the Americans with Disabilities Amended Act. Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) in Real Estate and certificates of completion will be offered for those eligible.
The housing workshop in Bloomington is just one in a series of training workshops conducted by the Indiana Civil Rights Commission as part of their Power of Diversity™ statewide series. The training series provides information on anti-discrimination laws and uncovers the benefits to a diverse neighborhood, workplace and community.
