INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Civil Rights Commission (ICRC) announced today the winners of their First Annual Student Essay Contest. Winning the contest was Heather Wright who is a fifth grade student at Allisonville Elementary in Indianapolis. Second and third place winners are Katy Roscetti and Eagle McFarlan representing Allisonville Elementary and Stalker Elementary in Bedford, Indiana, respectively.
The winners will each be honored at the Third Annual Civil Rights Game Friday, August 22, 2014 at Victory Field. The game, sponsored by the ICRC, will begin at 7:15 pm.
“We are proud to host the Civil Rights Game again and make this an annual tradition,” said Jamal L. Smith, Executive Director of the ICRC. “It’s an honor to help continue to spread the importance Negro League Baseball had in the battle civil rights as well as to honor young people with the Student Essay Contest.”
The Student Essay Contest asked students to submit an essay which addressed the question: “Why do you feel that education is the civil rights issue of our time?” The contest was open to all Indiana elementary school students in grades K-6.

As the first place winner, Heather will have her essay published in the Indianapolis Recorder and receive an Indianapolis Clowns throwback jersey as worn by the Indians during the Third Annual Civil Rights Game on August 22, 2014. She will also receive 8 tickets to the game on Friday, August 22, 2014 and have the opportunity to throw out the first pitch with Indiana Civil Rights Commission's Executive Director Jamal L. Smith.
Second Place - Katy Roscetti, Allisonville Elementary School
