Hoosier Homestead Award Program
In honor of Indiana's rich agricultural heritage, the Hoosier Homestead Award Program recognizes families with farms that have been owned by the same family for 100 years or more.
The program was instituted in 1976 and recognizes the contributions these family farms have made to the economic, cultural and social advancements of Indiana. In the past 45 years, more than 6,000 farms have received the honor.
There are two Hoosier Homestead Ceremonies each year: one is at the Indiana Statehouse and the other is during the State Fair in August.
Indiana family farms may qualify for the following:
- Centennial Award - 100 years of ownership
- Sesquicentennial Award - 150 years of ownership
- Bicentennial Award - 200 years of ownership

The deadline for the March ceremony is November 1 and the deadline for the August ceremony is April 1.

- If my farm is less that 20 acres and you need proof that the gross income is at least $1,000 a year, how many years of documentation do I need to provide?
We only need documentation for the most recent year. This can be something as simple as a receipt for the sale of crops for the year.
- What type of document best illustrates the transfer of ownership requested in step #2?
A copy of the Deed or Quit Claim Deed that includes the property description is best. At times this information is also included in a Will. Each transfer document must include the property description to verify that it is the same property.
- Are birth certificates and/or marriage licenses required when the land is transferred, and a marriage changes the last name of the ownership?
No. Simply complete the chart on the application and be sure to include how that person is related to the current owner. (i.e. maternal grandmother)
- If I just recently was transferred a piece of property previously awarded, can I re-apply for a Hoosier Homestead Award?
Once a farm has received an award, it is not eligible to receive that same award even if the property is transferred to a new family member. Awards are only given at the 100, 150 and 200 year milestones.
