Application Instructions

  • General Information

    The Fair Information Practice Act:  In compliance with Ind. Code 4-1-6, this agency is notifying you that you must provide the requested information, or your application will not be processed. You have the right to challenge, correct, or explain information maintained by this agency. The information you provide will become public record. Your examination scores and grade transcripts are confidential except in circumstances where their release is required by law, in which case you will be notified.

    Mandatory Disclosure of U.S. Social Security Number: Your social security number is being requested by this state agency in accordance with Ind. Code 4-1-8-1 and 25-1-5- 11(a). Disclosure is mandatory, and this record cannot be processed without it. Failure to disclose your U.S. social security number will result in the denial of your application. Application fees are not refundable.

    Abandon Applications:  If an applicant does not submit all requirements within one (1) year after the date on which the application is filed, the application for licensure is abandoned without any action of the Board. An application submitted after an abandoned application shall be treated as a new application.

  • Engineer Intern

    The following items are required for your application:

    1. Application fee of $10.00:  All fees are nonrefundable and/or nontransferable. Online processing fees apply.
    2. Positive Response Documentation: If you answer "Yes" to any questions on the application, explain fully in a statement that includes all details. Include the violation, location, date, cause number, and disposition. Submit copies of court documents for each instance to support the statement.
    3. Name Change Documentation: Documentation of any legal name change if your name differs from that on any of your documents. Documentation may include a copy of your marriage certificate or divorce decree.
    4. Official Transcript//or Evaluation of Foreign Degree: Upload official transcripts from your college and/or university, reflecting the date the degree is conferred, from where you received your degree.  Please upload at the time of application. *Please note* Having a credential evaluation completed does not make the degree an EAC ABET accredited degree.
      • Supplemental Form  - Form 50938 required for graduates from Non EAC ABET accredited programs; technology degrees and foreign degree applicants
    5. Examination: NCEES notification of passing FE exam.
    6. References: Upload 3 references unless the FE exam was completed before the date conferred of the degree. The references are to be completed by the reference on Form 15199.
  • Professional Engineer by Examination

    The following items are required for your application:

    1. Application fee of $300.00: All fees are nonrefundable and/or nontransferable. Online processing fees apply.
    2. Positive Response Documentation: If you answer "Yes" to any questions on the application, explain fully in a statement that includes all details. Include the violation, location, date, cause number, and disposition. Submit copies of court documents for each instance to support the statement.
    3. Name Change Documentation: Documentation of any legal name change if your name differs from that on any of your documents. Documentation may include a copy of your marriage certificate or divorce decree.
    4. Verification of State Licensure(s): Upload verification(s) from the state where you passed your exam(s) and all states where you hold or held licensure.
    5. Official Transcript//or Evaluation of Foreign Degree - Upload official transcripts from your college and/or university from where you received your degree.
      • Supplemental Form  - Form 50938 must be completed for Non EAC ABET accredited programs; technology degrees and foreign degree applicants. Please include all relevant education when completing the supplemental form. *Please note* Having a credential evaluation completed does not make the degree an EAC ABET accredited degree.
      • Evaluation of Foreign Degree - Any foreign degree must have an evaluation by NCEES (ncees.org or 864-654-6824) or any service that will meet the standards of the board to determine if your education meets Indiana's educational requirements.  This process must be done before the Board will review your application.
    6. Examination: NCEES notification of passing PE exam, once completed
    7. References: Upload 5 reference letters, 3 of which must be from Professional Engineers. The references are to be completed by the reference on Form 2146.  The Letter Regarding Engineer Applicant References can be provided to the references  to explain the requirement.
    8. Part III of the Examination: Upload the Part III Exam and answer sheet for Professional Engineers has the directions to fulfill this requirement.
  • Professional Engineer by Comity with NCEES File

    The following items are required for your application:

    1. Application fee of $300.00: All fees are nonrefundable and/or nontransferable. Online processing fees apply.

    4. Part III of the Examination: Part III Exam and answer sheet for Professional Engineers has the directions to fulfill this requirement.
    5. NCEES file: Must be requested to be made available to Indiana.  The following requirements will be available in the NCEES file.
      • Official Transcript//or Evaluation of Foreign Degree. *Please note* Having a credential evaluation completed does not make the degree an EAC ABET accredited degree.
        Supplemental Form - Form 50938
        must be completed for Non EAC ABET accredited programs; technology degrees and foreign degree applicants. Please include all relevant education when completing the supplemental form. This is an Indiana requirement and will not be listed in the NCEES record.

      • IC 25-31-1-14 Examination; reexamination Sec. 14. (a) The examination required of all applicants for registration as a professional engineer shall be a written or computer based examination which shall be divided into the following two (2) parts:
        • (1) Engineering fundamentals.
        • (2) Principles and practice of engineering
    6. Official Transcript//or Evaluation of Foreign Degree: Upload official transcripts from your college and/or university from where you received your degree.  Please upload at the time of application. *Please note* Having a credential evaluation completed does not make the degree an EAC ABET accredited degree.

  • Professional Engineer Continuing Education Sponsor

    Applying as a new CE Sponsor

    If you have not previously obtained approval as a Continuing Education Provider for the Indiana Professional Engineer Continuing Education Sponsor, you will submit an application as a new provider.  If you have previously obtained approval and were issued an Indiana PE CE Sponsor number and wish to request approval of additional courses, please skip to the next section for instructions.

    The following items are required for your application:

    1. Upload all instructor's resumes with complete professional background
    2. Upload detailed course description for each course
    3. Upload a copy of the advertisement brochure or any promotional materials if used

    Request Approval of Additional Courses

    To request approval for additional course(s), upload the following information to the license in your MyLicense One account using the Upload Additional Documentation Action item. Do NOT apply as a new CE Sponsor/Provider if you have previously been approved by the State of Indiana:

    1. Application
    2. Upload all instructor's resumes with complete professional background
    3. Upload detailed course description for each course
    4. Upload a copy of the advertisement brochure or any promotional materials if used

    Review Approved Courses by Course Number:

    For an approved Continuing Education Provider to view their previously approved courses, you may login to the old licensing platform located at  mylicense.in.gov/eGov/index.html. You will need to Login to Business Licensing with MyLicense. If you do not remember your username and password to access the old licensing platform, you will need your license number and registration code, this is listed on the approval letter. If you need your registration code, please email pla10@pla.in.gov.

    Once you are logged in, you may view the approved courses, by selecting CE Course Provider Entry from the left menu.

    **Please note that you cannot upload licensees. You can only VIEW the list of approved courses.  Please do not attempt to upload licensees as the feature is not available on this license type.

Renewal Instructions

  • Renewal Information
    • Registered Professional Engineers expire July 31 of even numbered years.
    • The professional engineer renewal fee is $100.
    • Registered professional engineers are required to complete thirty (30) hours of continuing education with at least one (1) hour in ethics and one (1) hour in Indiana statutes and rules in order to renew a professional engineer registration. A professional engineer with a status of Inactive or a professional engineer initially licensed in Indiana in the second year of a biennium is not required to obtain any continuing education. A professional engineer initially licensed in the first year of the biennium shall only be required to obtain fifteen (15) hours of continuing education.

    Renewal notices are sent approximately ninety (90) days prior to the expiration date. License holders with valid email addresses on file will be emailed the renewal notice. Those who do not have valid email addresses on file will be mailed the license renewal notice; this notice is mailed to the address of record with the Board. The Board has no way of knowing whether or not a notice reaches its destination; therefore when a notice has been emailed to a valid email address or mailed, the duty of the Board has been performed.

    If you wish to renew your license to inactive status, you may renew by selecting this status when prompted. When renewing to inactive status, you are not required to complete continuing education. An inactive registered professional engineer may not practice engineering.

    Activation of an Inactive License:

    If your license is on inactive status and you wish to renew to active status, If your license is on inactive status and you wish to Activate your license, you must first renew your license and then submit an Activation Request in your MyLicense One account. Please include copies of continuing education certificates verifying you have met CE requirements.

  • Reinstatement Information

    If your license has been expired for three or more years, you must reinstate your license to practice.  Please submit your reinstatement online with the additional documentation:

    • Documentation to Upload:
      • Letter of work history or resume to include the following information since the expiration of your Indiana license: place(s) of employment, a list of projects worked on, confirm if you have or have not placed your stamp/seal on any documents within the State of Indiana, and confirm if you have or have not performed work in the state of Indiana.
      • Verification of an active license in another state.
      • Proof of Continuing Education for the past two years from the date of your reinstatement application.
  • Continuing Education Requirements

    Pursuant to 864 IAC 1.1-15-1, a licensee is not required to seek authorization from the board before fulfilling their continuing education requirements. Hours completed by licensees are subject, however, to the statutes and rules below. Although prior authorization is not required before attending a course, the board has discretion to approve or deny courses at any time.

    For your reference, "Approved organization," as described in IC 25-1-4-0.2, refers to the following:
    (1) United States Department of Education.
    (2) Council on Post-Secondary Education.
    (3) Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals.
    (4) Joint Commission on Healthcare Organizations.
    (5) Federal, state, and local government agencies.
    (6) A college or other teaching institution accredited by the United States Department of Education or the Council on Post-Secondary Education
    (7) A national organization of practitioners whose members practicing in Indiana are subject to regulation by a board or agency regulating a profession or occupation under this title.
    (8) A national, state, district, or local organization that operates as an affiliated entity under the approval of an organization listed in subdivisions (1) through (7).
    (9) An internship or residency program conducted in a hospital that has been approved by an organization listed in subdivisions (1) through (7).
    (10) Any other organization or individual approved by the board.

    Rule 15. Continuing Education

    864 IAC 1.1-15-2 Definitions
    Authority: IC 25-1-4-8; IC 25-31-1-17.5
    Affected: IC 25-1-4-0.2; IC 25-1-4-0.5.
    Sec. 2. (a) As used in this rule, "biennium" means a two (2) year licensure period during which continuing education requirements must be met. It:
    (1) commences on August 1 of an even-numbered year; and
    (2) concludes on July 31 of the next even-numbered year.
    (b) Based on IC 25-1-4-0.5 and as used in this rule, "continuing education" means an orderly process of instruction that is:
    (1) approved by an approved organization (as defined in IC 25-1-4-0.2) or the board; and
    (2) designed to directly enhance a professional engineer's knowledge and skill in providing services relevant to the practice of engineering.
    The activities described in section 4 of this rule qualify as continuing education if they augment the professional engineer's knowledge and skill in providing services relevant to the practice of engineering.
    (c) As used in this rule, "hour of continuing education" means at least fifty (50) minutes of instruction or course contact time. "Hours of continuing education" has the same meaning for the number of hours stated. An alternate term for an hour of continuing education that is used nationally with continuing education for professional engineers is professional development hour or PDH.

    Sec. 3. (a) Except for holders of an inactive certificate under section 9 of this rule, during each biennium a professional engineer shall complete thirty (30) hours of continuing education that meets the requirements of this rule and IC 25-1-4 in order to renew his or her professional engineer registration. This continuing education requirement first applies to the biennium of August 1, 2010, through July 31, 2012, and therefore first applies to the July 31, 2012, renewal.
    (b) At least one (1) hour of the continuing education required in each biennium under subsection (a) shall be in ethics applicable to the practice of professional engineering.
    (c) At least one (1) hour of the continuing education required in each biennium under subsection (a) shall be in Indiana statutes and rules applicable to the practice of professional engineering.
    (d) A professional engineer initially licensed in Indiana in the first year of a biennium shall only be required to obtain fifteen (15) hours of continuing education. A professional engineer initially licensed in Indiana in the second year of a biennium shall not be required to obtain any continuing education.
    (e) Up to fifteen (15) hours of continuing education obtained during a biennium beyond what is required for that biennium may be carried over to the next biennium.

Exams & Testing

  • Examination Registration Process

    Fundamentals of Engineering Exam Candidates register directly with NCEES to sit for the exam. Once you have taken and passed the exam, apply directly to the Board for certification as an Engineer Intern. Review the Engineering Application Checklist for required documents for certification. Review 864 IAC 1.1-2-2 and 864 IAC 1.1-2-4 to ensure you meet the requirements for certification.

    Principles and Practice Exam Candidates must apply along with the corresponding application fee and all required documents after the education and experience requirements are met. Review the Engineering Application Instructions for required documents for exam approval. Approvals are completed weekly on NCEES by the state.

    ONLY after board approval, register with NCEES and pay an examination fee to reserve a seat for the examination. Do not register with NCEES without board approval. Fees will not be refunded if you register and have not been approved by the Board.
    You will receive an email notification from NCEES when scores are released. For more information on the scoring process, visit this link: ncees.org Once you have your pass notice, upload it to your online application and the issuance notice will be sent out within 10 business days.

    Passed Principles and Practice
    Candidates must submit your pass letter and issuance fee to the Board.
    Issuance Fee Schedule

    August 1 of an even year through July 31 odd year the fee is $100

    Issuance Fee Payment
    When your application is complete, you will be sent your Issuance Approved letter with your Invoice to be paid for the Issuance Fee. Please follow the instructions on the letter which inform you to log back into your MyLicense One account, select the PAY INVOICES button, enter your Invoice Number and Full Name as it appears on the Invoice to search. Once located, you will proceed to the payment processor and after payment is received, your license will be issued with 24 business hours.

    Failed Principles and Practice
    If you have not exhausted all of your examination attempts in accordance with 864 IAC 1.1-4.1-7, please proceed to reschedule with NCEES. To reschedule as a candidate for the next examination in Indiana, you must complete the registration process online at the NCEES Website prior to the posted deadline. All instructions and deadlines can be found at ncees.org.

    If you have exhausted all examination attempts, please review 864 IAC 1.1-4.1-8 for additional requirements prior to submitting a new application to the board prior to registering with NCEES.

    • Question: Can the FE or PE exam be waived?
      • Answer: Per the code below, the FE or PE exam cannot be waived:

    • Question: How can I obtain a verification of my license?
      • Answer: You will have to purchase a digital verification from the Online Services located HERE.  Once you have purchased the digital verification you will need to email the verification to pla10@pla.in.gov and inform the board as to which board the verification needs to receive the information.
    • Question: What are the requirements for professional engineer registration?
      • Answer: One must graduate from an approved engineer curriculum followed by fours years of experience. Please review the rules and statutes for the education, experience and exam requirements.
    • Question: What is a supplemental form? 
      • Answer: A supplemental form is used for applicants that may have a technology degree, graduated from a non ABET accredited program, or is a foreign degree applicant.  If you fall into one of the above categories a supplemental form is needed to complete your application.  Please include all relevant education on the supplemental form. The supplemental form is listed with the Professional Engineer application.
    • Question: What are the requirements for references?
      • Answer: You must submit an application, including five references completed on the reference form listed with the application instruction. Three must be from professional engineers. You must also submit certification from the state in which you received your license, showing proof of EI and PE, along with college transcripts and also complete part three of the examination (a written test on Indiana license law).
    • Question: How does one become licensed as a professional corporation?
      • Answer: If your corporation is an LLC, INC, Limited, PC or PA you will need to register with the Secretary of State.
    • Question: When does registration as an Engineer Intern (EI) expire?
      • Answer: There is no expiration or renewal of registration for an Engineer Intern.
    • Question: How do I get my seal?
      • Answer: Seals are sold at stationery stores, or where they make rubber stamps. See 864 IAC 1.1-7-2, for rules of design and content.
    • Question: After the board has approved my application, how do I get licensed?
      • Answer: You will be sent an email with an invoice informing you of your approval and to submit an issuance fee.  Once the issuance fee is received your license will be issued.
    • Question: How often are the exams administered?
      • Answer: You will need to contact NCEES for the written and CBT exam schedule.
