About

The Town of Farmersburg was originally founded in 1853 under the name “Ascension” on a 40-acre plat. Ascension was a small mining community along the Evansville-Terre Haute rail line. Ascension was home to the Ascension Seminary until 1872 and is claimed to have inspired the beginnings and foundation that gave rise to State Normal School (now called Indiana State University). Our Seminary produces many physicians, lawyers, teachers, and ministers in the area. The Post Office was established in 1855 and the business has been operating since that time. In 1889, Ascension would be renamed “Farmersburg” to reflect the heavy farming community that came after the mines closed. The first Old Settler’s Festival was held in 1896. The festival was held as a Reunion of Civil War Soldiers and a festival for the elderly. Over 10,000 patrons attended the festival that year. The Old Settlers Festival still takes place today. Approximately 1,100 people call Farmersburg “home”.
