Burn Laws

OPEN BURNING LAWS (Marion County, Indianapolis)

Burning in a barrel (Agricultural Waste):

  • Covered with a 1/4″ mesh screen
  • Fire at least 15′ from any structure
  • 1/4″ vent holes in the bottom of the barrel
  • No trash or leaves can be burned only dried limbs, twigs, and branches
  • Must be between hours of 10:00 am-3:00 pm
  • Shall be extinguished if it causes any health hazard
  • No burning on No-Zone Action Days, on Sunday’s, and in apartment complexes or mobile home communities

Ceremonial and bon fires, camp fires, and fire for personal comfort:

  • Surrounded by a ring of stone or brick or in an approved fire place/pit or outdoor stove
  • Responsible adult at site
  • Only untreated wood (no leaves or trash)
  • Winds must be between 5-20 mph
  • Available and attended water supply
  • Fire at least 15′ from any structure
