The Indiana Arts Commission and Indiana Department of Education partnered to provide a hands-on learning experience designed to empower teaching artists and classroom educators to partner together on meaningful arts integration experiences for their students. This opportunity was designed to expand teachers’ & artists’ tools in creative teaching approaches and to offer ways to connect teachers and artists together to support student success in the classroom.
The in-person, hands-on trainings featured dual tracks for classroom educators and teaching artists to learn content specifically tailored to them, as well as opportunities for the two groups to come together to network with and learn from one another.
Classroom educators who participated in the 2022 Learning Labs are now eligible to apply for up to $3,000 to provide an arts integration artist residency to put their learning into practice in their own classrooms during the 2022-2023 academic year.
Arts integration is the work of skillfully combining arts learning with other learning goals. The Partnering Arts, Communities, and Education (PACE) program model embeds an artist, long-term, in a classroom to leverage the creativity of art with the goals of the classroom. In the PACE arts integration model, we combined arts (dance, music, visual arts, or theatre), with literacy learning for elementary school classrooms. The data clearly shows, after experiencing a PACE arts integration residency in their classroom, students were stronger writers and communicators.
Interested teachers and teaching artists had two opportunities to take part in Arts Integration Learning Labs during the month of July.
* Wednesday, July 13th * Muncie, IN
* Friday, July 15th * Jasper, IN
This 2-track learning event was designed for:
- Classroom Educators employed by an Indiana-accredited school (required):
- Non-arts Teachers (Arts specialists already know much of this content)
- Classroom Educators who aren't already well-versed in arts integration
- Content is most beneficial for K-8 educators
- Teaching Artists (must be resident of Indiana)
- Early to Mid-Career Teaching Artists
- Teaching Artists who have done some in-school workshops/residencies but have yet to design an arts integrated residency
Following the Learning Labs, educators now have the opportunity to apply for a $3,000 fellowship to support arts integration programming in their classrooms. The timeline for the fellowship process is currently being communicated to eligible participants.
