A: The US Department of Labor originally told the state it would authorize the $25 increase the week the President signed the stimulus package into law. Indiana quickly announced plans to increase weekly benefits. Then last week the US Dept. of Labor changed its position and informed Indiana that it would only authorize payments beginning last week. The federal government’s decision means Indiana could only pay $25 and not the $50 as originally announced.
A: No. Claimants currently can qualify for up to 26 weeks of state unemployment benefits and up to 33 weeks of federal extended benefits. The federal extended benefits were scheduled to expire at the end of March. Now, an individual can collect the 33 weeks through the end of the year, but the stimulus provisions do not provide for any additional weeks.
