Yellow fever is an arthropod-borne virus (arbovirus) that is transmitted via the bite of an infected mosquito of the genus Aedes, primarily Aedes aegypti. Yellow fever is found in tropical and subtropical areas of Africa and South America. Most people infected with yellow fever have no symptoms. Those who do typically have fever, muscle and joint pain, severe headache, nausea and vomiting, chills and lethargy. Some people may experience a brief remission of illness followed by more serious symptoms, such as high fever, jaundice, shock and organ failure.

Established populations of Aedes aegypti have not been found in Indiana, so yellow fever is not spread here. The people most at risk for contracting yellow fever are travelers to regions of the world where the disease is found.
